Description

Details

Our American White Oak is sourced from the Appalachian Mountains in North America and planed to order in our factory here in Yorkshire. The heartwood can vary in colour from light tan or pale yellow-brown to dark or pale brown and can have a pinkish tint. The wood usually has a straight, open grain and is medium to coarse in texture. It has longer rays than red oak and therefore displays more figure, which can include swirls, crotch pattern, burls and a tiger-ray flake pattern. The sapwood is whitish to light brown and varies in width.

Properties
The wood planes, turns, bores, sands, mortises, stains and polishes well. Pre-boring is advised for nailing and screwing, and it glues satisfactorily. The tannin conent can react with ferrous metals to cause iron staining if the wood becomes wet. Select non ferrous (brass or stainless steel) fixings where possible.

Durability
Durable but not quite as much as European Oak. The heartwood is resistant to decay.

Typical Uses
Furniture and cabinetmaking, joinery, office furniture, boat building, trim, panelling, flooring, cooperage for wine and whisky, coffins, shingles, railroad ties. It is also sliced for figured veneers and rotary-cut for plywood.

Good quality oak
Nice and straight and well machined. P&P pushes the price up so only 3 for value I'm afraid which is a shame because on the actual price of the timber they are very competitive.

The white oak was very high quality; great surface finish, and very straight. The whole process was very easy and with speedy delivery. Thoroughly recommended for cut to size hardwoods.

4 out of 5
Hi, just received 5 lengths of 2.6m x 171mm x 19mm. Planed all round American Oak. 4 were excellent, only minor knot marks. The 5th length had a large growth mark about 300mm long quite central to length and going most of the way through the thickness so there was not a complete "good" side. As I only required 4 good lengths and the 5th was for small parts I was able to complete my project and I'm very happy with result but really the 5th length should have been rejected. In fairness I did specify minimum of 2.6m lengths and its possible there was enough good wood to meet my minimum 2.6m requirement as there was extra length but there would have been a join. Thanks for excellent service and I shall certainly buy from you in the future.

High quality
I bought some American planed white oak for cabinet making purposes and was well pleased with the quality of planks provided with little wastage due to defects. The planed finish was of high quality with edges being sufficiently accurate to allow high quality butt jointing without further planning. The product was very well protected for delivery.
