Quick Overview

Three thin wood boards at 800mm long and 197mm wide in the thickness of your choice. The boards are machined from solid character grade European Oak, containing some knots and figuring.

Suitable for woodworking, model making and furniture restoration and crafts such as marquetry, intarsia and luthiery.

Please note: It is usual for the thin wood boards to display a slight curvature across the width due to the natural movement of the timber.

Description

Details

Our thin European Oak wood is sourced from France and machined to order in our factory here in Yorkshire. The heartwood varies from light tan to biscuit or deep brown, with distinct bands of earlywood and latewood. The grain is usually straight, but irregular or cross grain can occur. Rays and growth rings show an attractive figuring ("silver grain") when quarter sawn.

Properties
A fairly hard, heavy and dense hardwood, with high crushing and bending strength, low stiffness and resistance to shock loads. It is very good for turning and steam-bending. It is suitable for gluing, painting, sanding, staining and varnishing and will take high polish. European oak can be darkened by fuming with ammonia. Due to tannins present in the timber, oak wood will react with ferrous metals when wet. Select non-ferrous (brass or stainless steel) fixings where possible.

Durability
Extremely durable.

Typical Uses
Thin oak timber is often used for decorative veneers, model making, marquetry, intarsia, luthiery, furniture restoration and crafts.

Bookbinding
I have not yet had the pleasure of using the oak boards .I am in the process of making a mediaeval binding - lacing with cords onto oak boards - but on completion I will contact you with the results.

I will certainly buy these again
As above, I am so impressed with quality of this product that I would not hesitate to buy again. One of the hobbyist's problems is the lack of good quality wood in small sizes, this product, from this company, sorts that out very well.

This is a superb product
If you understand what you are buying this is a superb product, The grade of the timber will exceed any reasonable professional expectation. It will arrive superbly packaged within a reasonable time. Because the wood is thin it has to bow. This cannot be avoided so you will need to be prepared to deal with this - certainly the packaging will help with any short term storage. I have used this product when patching and renovating 18th century country house doors. It is simply excellent.

Great value
I'm not a expert so can't really comment on the wood - there is a very slight bow. I'm glad to have found this as it is exactly what I was looking for. Definitely will buy some more. Excellent packaging.

Delighted with my purchase
Packaged well and far exceeded my expectations . . . almost too nice to use, just wanted to look at it for a while :) Now used some and looks amazing with Osmo Polyx Oil showing off the grain well.

Great when you need thin boards
These thin oak boards are ideal for inset panels in frame and panel construction, and can be edge joined with care. As the description states there can be some small amount of cupping, but this doesn’t really present any problem. Very useful for all manner of projects, and packaged very securely.

Nice timber, not perfect
Bit of an annoying bow to the boards.. perhaps cut before properly dry. Some minor knotting also present in the thinner sheets leaving holes. Not great for decorative work. Otherwise these boards were great to work with and finished well.

Great value
The quality of wood is very high for the price and it was incredibly well packed. The only downside was that each board had one smoothly cut edge and one rough edge with splintered wood. Nothing a little sanding couldn't solve but a shame as the rest of the boards where cut so well.

A good buy
These boards were up to British Hardwoods' usual standard. Good quality timber, nicely machined to size and available for collection on time. As pointed out in the description there was slight curvature but with careful planning of my project this wasn't a problem.
