Quick Overview

Our hand planed air dried oak beams are supplied from stock to order. The timber has a natural light colour and is a rustic grade, containing plenty of characterful knots, cracks and splits.

The beams are planed by hand, rather than machine planed, so a tolerance of up to 10mm can be expected. The planing process reduces the size of the beam by around 3-5mm on each face, the ends are left sawn. The dimensions listed are nominal sizes (i.e. the beam's size before planing).

There is an additional set-up charge of £30 per order for hand planing which will be automatically added in the shopping cart. This is a one-off fee per order - regardless of the quantity of beams ordered.

IMPORTANT: When ordering please be aware that oak beams are extremely heavy and you will need to be able to unload them. Our delivery vehicles do not have cranes or forklifts and the driver is not insured to unload the truck. You will need to provide your own offloading equipment or have sufficient physically capable persons present at delivery to facilitate the offloading process.

Resized Hand Planed Oak Beams

Our hand planed air dried oak beams can be cut down to your preferred size for an additional charge, however, we do not cut to any dimension to less than 100mm.

Due to stock availability, resized beams may not necessarily be cut down from beams with specific dimensions. Beam selection for resizing will take place by us, on site, at the time that we produce your order. We will not produce two (or more) sections from one single beam ordered and offcuts are not provided.

Using Hand Planed Beams Outdoors

Oak timber is naturally very high in tannic acid (tannins). Tannic acid is soluble, so if the beams become wet (e.g. from rainwater) the tannins will leach out of the timber into the surrounding area. This natural leaching process will display as brown staining and will mark surfaces such as patios, driveways and paving stones, etc. The application of a good quality exterior finish (e.g. Osmo UV Protection Oil) may help reduce the leaching process, but will not eliminate it. Over time, once the beams become weathered, the leaching process will stop.
