Just Fun

  • Our Trekking Trio reach new heights

In a well-earned break from timber machining, three of our fine craftsmen have started a small weekend walking group and are taking full advantage of our close proximity to the beautiful Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Elliot, Jason and Jimmy at the summit of Pen-y-Ghent

Flooring craftsmen Elliot and Jason, along with finishing technician Jimmy, scaled the heights of Pen-y-Ghent last weekend in a start to their perambulatory pursuits. Pen-y-Ghent is a fell in the Yorkshire Dales, which is one of the Yorkshire Three Peaks, the other two being Ingleborough and Whernside. The fell lies some 3 km east of the village of Horton in Ribblesdale and forms part of the Pennine Way.

They enjoyed a bracing walk on a beautiful spring morning, with the view from the top making it well worth the climb. Our intrepid trio plan to conquer the two remaining peaks over the coming weeks. We are lucky indeed to live (and work) in such a beautiful part of the country. • Auroras Encore - A Yorkshire Winner!

Hearty congratulations to a long standing friend and associate of British Hardwoods, Harvey Smith and his wife Sue. They had great cause for celebration this weekend as Sue trained this years winner at the 2013 Grand National. Auroras Encore sprang a 66-1 surprise win by nine lengths at Aintree. The 11-year-old, ridden by Ryan Mania, jumped superbly as 17 of the 40 runners finished the race.

British Hardwoods has provided sawdust and hardwood timber to the Smith's stables in Yorkshire for many years now. Harvey was Guest of Honour at the Grand Opening of our new premises in Cross Hills in September 2004. Here he is trying out a new mode of transport in our factory with directors Mark Rushworth and Tony Fillingham.

Well done to Auroras Encore from all at British Hardwoods, we hope we may have played some (small) part in your victory.

  • Tony and Jake go creative crazy!

Amidst the Pre-Christmas rush British Hardwoods boss Tony and woodwork craftsman Jake have been beavering away on their own specialist projects. Tony has spent the last couple of days producing a fantastic looking hand-planed bed,  just in time to help accommodate a house full of Christmas guests.

The bed is fixed together using through wedged mortise and tenon joints with the corner posts being cut from air dried oak sleepers. The sides and ends of the bed have been cut from waney edged 41mm oak. Tony seems very pleased with his impressive creation and has saved his guest from potential Christmas back-ache by sleeping on the floor!

A Less Urgent but equally impressive creation is Jake's hand-made coffee table. The table consists of individual pieces of each species of wood laminated together to create a brilliant striped look. Everything from the table top to the legs, and even the pegs for the mortise and tenon joints are made from various species of laminated woods.

Jake plans on giving the table as a present to a mystery person. We won't announce it to avoid spoiling any surprises!
