To achieve an authentic, aged appearance, newly machined oak boards are passed through our custom-made distressing machine which imparts random indentations to the surface and edges. The boards are then wire brushed which raises the grain of the timber and adds texture to the surface. Lastly, the boards are fumed, a chemical process which darkens the timber. Each board will react differently to the fuming process, producing a natural range of dark, medium and lighter shades; we recommend loose laying boards before fixing to achieve an even spread of tones. Knots, checks and splits are filled and sanded smooth with a black oak filler.
All the raw timber we use is sourced from either PEFC or FSC certified suppliers. The timber is kiln-dried to a moisture content of 8-10% and kept at an ambient temperature in our heated and humidity controlled factory.
* IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT FUMING: Fuming is a chemical process which darkens the oak in a natural way - as an alternative to staining. Each board reacts differently to the fuming process and the floor will not have a uniform colour. Photographs on the website are provided for guidance only.
