Planed All Round American White Oak Timber
Our Planed All Round American White Oak is accurately machined using state of the art German technology, ensuring you receive timber that is perfectly smooth and straight, making it a pleasure to work with.
Orders of more than two metres of any single size will be supplied in random lengths as described above. We recommend adding plenty of extra onto your total combined length requirements to allow for wastage.
Please be aware that we don’t cut timber to length as this slows down our manufacturing process significantly.
If you would like prices for edge-jointed timber or non-standard sizes, please contact our Sales Office who will be happy to advise you on availability.
Our American White Oak is sourced from the Appalachian Mountains in North America and planed to order in our factory here in Yorkshire. The heartwood can vary in colour from light tan or pale yellow-brown to dark or pale brown and can have a pinkish tint. The wood usually has a straight, open grain and is medium to coarse in texture. It has longer rays than red oak and therefore displays more figure, which can include swirls, crotch pattern, burls and a tiger-ray flake pattern. The sapwood is whitish to light brown and varies in width.
The wood planes, turns, bores, sands, mortises, stains and polishes well. Pre-boring is advised for nailing and screwing, and it glues satisfactorily. The tannin conent can react with ferrous metals to cause iron staining if the wood becomes wet. Select non ferrous (brass or stainless steel) fixings where possible.
Durable but not quite as much as European Oak. The heartwood is resistant to decay.
Furniture and cabinetmaking, joinery, office furniture, boat building, trim, panelling, flooring, cooperage for wine and whisky, coffins, shingles, railroad ties. It is also sliced for figured veneers and rotary-cut for plywood.
