Quick Overview

Our Thin American Cherry is manufactured from prime grade hardwood timber and sanded on one face. The timber is supplied in random lengths, which vary depending on stock availability at the time of manufacture.

Please note: The timber is sawn and then sanded on one face only and is not machine planed. If you require fully planed, square edge timber please see our range of Planed All Round American Cherry. It is normal for thin wood to display a slight curvature across the width due to the natural movement of the timber.

Our thin Cherry timber is sourced from the USA and machined to order in our factory here in Yorkshire. The boards are sawn and then sanded on one face and are suitable for woodworking, furniture making, model making and crafts such as marquetry, intarsia and luthiery. The timber has a heartwood that can vary in colour from reddish brown to either deep red or a lighter red-brown. It normally has brown flecks and small gum pockets. There can be marked colour variation between boards. The narrow sapwood is whitish to reddish brown, sometimes tending to creamy pink. American cherry has a fine texture and a rich satiny lustre and may have dark wavy streaks.

Properties
Medium strength and resistance to shock loads. It works well with hand and machine tools, and glues, nails, screws and polishes well. American cherry turns, planes and moulds well. Exposure to ultraviolet light can change the wood to a mahogany colour.

Durability
Moderately durable, the heartwood is very resistant to decay.

Typical Uses
Furniture, cabinetmaking, quality joinery, turning, carving, musical instruments including pianos and violin bows and decorative veneers.
