Fumed (Smoked) Solid Oak Flooring

Fuming is an alternative to staining which we offer on our Solid Oak Flooring. Fuming has an advantage over staining in that the fuming process does not obscure the grain of the wood but darkens it in a natural way. Fuming is widely known as "smoking" although this term is incorrect as the wood is exposed to ammonia fumes and not to smoke. Each floorboard will react differently to the fumigation process, expanding the natural range of tones of an unfumed floor. Every fumed solid oak floor we make will contain a spread of colour tones ranging from medium to dark oak shades.

Fuming is not an exact science, every board and every batch of timber will react differently to the fuming process, depending on the tannins (acids) present in the oak. Every fumed solid oak floor is completely unique and the boards will not have a uniform colour. Photographs on the website and samples are provided for guidance only - we cannot guarantee an exact colour match. If you prefer an solid oak floor with a uniform dark tone, or have a specific shade in mind, we recommend using an appropriate wood stain rather than fuming.
