Sawn Prime English Ash (per cubic foot)
Our Sawn English Ash Timber is supplied by the cubic foot in a mixture of live and square edge timber. Some boards present plenty of beautiful olive ash heartwood and a distinctive grain pattern. The timber is classed as a prime grade although may contain some shakes and splits. The board lengths are random and tend to be around 8ft (2.4m) to 10ft (3m), but can vary. The boards widths are also random but are typically between 6" (150mm) and 10" (250mm). Some boards are wider than 10" (250mm) but are only available for collection due to their weight. You would be very welcome to call in at our premises in Yorkshire to select your own boards.
Guide to Cubic Foot Calculation:
An average 3m x 8" x 1" board equates to 0.55 cubic foot
Our Native English Ash boards are sustainably sourced and then sawn and kiln-dried on site, here at our factory in Yorkshire. The timber is a prime grade though may contain some small knots and splits and shakes. The boards are carefully stored in our heated and acclimatised factory giving an average moisture content of between 9-11%.
Properties
The wood is elastic, tough and strong relative to its weight and has good stiffness and hardness. Shock resistance is very good. It works well with machine hand tools but has a moderate blunting effect. The harder species need preboring for nailing and screwing. It polishes, stains and glues well.
Durability
Slightly harder than oak although not as durable.
Typical Uses
Used for quality furniture, interior joinery, boat building and built-in kitchens. Other uses include sports equipment such as oars, paddles, bats and cues, and handles for workshop and garden tools. It is also a good source of decorative veneers.
