Sawn Prime English Sycamore (per cubic foot)
Our Sawn English Sycamore Timber is supplied by the cubic foot in a mixture of live and square edge timber. The board lengths are random and tend to be around 10ft (3m), but can vary. The boards widths are also random but are typically between 4" (100mm) and 10" (250mm). Some boards are wider than 10" (250mm) but are generally only available for collection due to their weight. For more information or if you wish to place an order, please contact us to discuss your requirements. You would be very welcome to call in at our premises in Yorkshire to select your own boards.
Guide to Cubic Foot Calculation:
An average 3m x 8" x 2" board equates to 1.09 cubic foot
Our Native Sycamore boards are sustainably sourced and then sawn and kiln-dried on site, here at our factory in Yorkshire. The timber is a prime grade though may contain some small knots and splits and shakes. The boards are carefully stored in our heated and acclimatised factory giving an average moisture content of between 9-11%.
Properties
It has medium bending and crushing strength, very low stiffness, low resistance to shock loads, and steam-bends very well. It works easily with machine and hand tools, with a moderate blunting effect. Very sharp tools are advised for a clean finish. It planes, bores, turns, moulds, glues, mortises, screws, sands and paints well. It carves and nails easily, and takes stains and polishes very well.
Durability
Sycamore decays easily if untreated, but is permeable for preservative treatment. The sapwood is vulnerable to the common furniture bettle and other insects.
Typical Uses
Furniture and turning. Other uses include domestic flooring, dairy utensils, food containers, cooperage, textile rollers, brush handles, bobbins, and decorative and dyed veneers.
